2016. The Year That Was…

This year OMX Pro Team have once again grown as a team and further established ourselves amongst the best teams in the World. We finish the year with a UCI World Ranking of 12th, our best ever, and we wrap up the season with some of the strongest results we have ever achieved:

In 2016 we recorded our highest Elite World Cup placing with Annie Last’s 17th place in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada; Martin stormed to victory in the HC category race in Istanbul; after years of trying, we secured an overall British XC National Series title with a fine season of domestic racing from Isla Short; Mariske Strauss and Cherie Vale were unstoppable in South Africa and finished the season in amazing style with seven wins from seven stages at the Cape Pioneer Trek; and finally, the cherry on top of the cake, we made it to an Olympic Games as Shlomi Haimy lined up and took on the World in Rio.

Each member of the team has worked tirelessly to achieve these results, with unwavering passion, some blood, a lot of sweat and a few tears (but mostly smiles) along the way! OMX is still a small team in many respects, but we have pulled together to make big things happen.

The journey from a local team of friends in South East England to the number one team in the World continues. We are dedicated to make the dream come true, and we are very excited to push forward into 2017 with great memories from a successful 2016.

A big, heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been a part of the journey and supported us through the year.

News on our 2017 roster will be revealed soon. Watch this space!

Farewell, Cherie

After two great seasons together we part ways with Cherie Redecker (née Vale)  in 2017.
Cherie came to OMX Pro Team as a newbie professional at the very start of her cycling career, and leaves as a well-developed and well-rounded rider who has proven herself on the World stage. Cherie’s positivity and drive has been an inspiration to many who have watched her progress over the last two years, and we are incredibly proud and humbled by what she has achieved. Cherie has been a stage-race winner, a National Champion and always the source of a warm smile and a great conversation.
All smiles at the finish line of the 2016 La Bresse World Cup, with Team Manager Paul.

One of the only times Cherie was not smiling! She really does know how to suffer.

One of the only times Cherie was not smiling! She really does know how to suffer.

Cherie, thank you for all you have brought the team, and we wish you all the luck in the future as you move from South Africa to Germany and begin a new chapter in your life.
Good luck, Cherie.

Good luck, Cherie.

Shalom, Shlomi

After two fun and highly successful years with OMX Pro Team we say a sad goodbye to Shlomi Haimy.
Shlomi joined the team at the point when we re-branded and expanded to become a truly professional outfit with an ambitious Olympic outlook. Shlomi embodied our vision of passion and progress, and he ultimately delivered us to the start line of an Olympic Games and thus a dream come true. Along the way Shlomi brought his unique character; he is a true gentleman with a big heart and a wicked sense of humour. He made us smile and he made us proud.
A winner, and a great team mate.

A winner, and a great team mate.

Passionate, progressive and hugely dedicated, Shlomi is a little guy with big talent!

Passionate, progressive and hugely dedicated, Shlomi is a little guy with big talent!

We wish Shlomi the very best of luck in the future both on and off the bike.
Thank you, Shlomi.

Shlomi’s #Road2Rio

Friday’s Rio 2016 Olympic Opening Ceremony got us pretty emotional!

Twelve years ago the team was a small group of local lads for whom the Olympics was a far off and, quite frankly, a rather unrealistic dream. Over the years that far off dream has got closer, and this year, finally, it will come true! OMX Pro Team will be part of the Olympic Games.

The mountain bike race is now two weeks away, and today’s World Cup in Mont Sainte Anne, Canada, is Shlomi’s last race before he takes to the start line for the biggest race of his life.

DSC_0267

Here’s a quick look at Shlomi’s latest build up to Rio where he has been training in Canada:

-How long have you been in Canada?

Two and a half weeks

– Why did you decide to go to Canada for the final phase of your training?

Well, the primary reason is because of the fifth round of the UCI World Cup held in MSA, Canada. Additionally, the timing zone is very close to that in Brazil (1h different).

– Has everything gone to plan or have you had any set backs?

Yes, in generall all went like planned. The only issue I had is two days without training because a health problem. Probably my body has needed this rest.

– What are your aims for MSA World Cup? How important is the race in your Rio preparations?

Rio is my main focus and the training aim is to build a good form toward this. Of course, this is why I am not sure how will be my performance in MSA World Cup. I am feeling good and can say that in the last two months my shape has been nicely progressing. As always, I will do my best in MSA World Cup!

– Have your emotions changed much over the last few weeks as the Olympics have got closer? Do you feel more nervous, more excited, is the pressure getting bigger?

To be honest, the Olympics is bigger than anything I did so far. From a young age I have been dreaming about the Olympics and after all those years it became reality. I am enjoying my #road2rio and I am focusing on my daily tasks. At the end of the day I am going to do what I know the best; riding my bike as fast as possible.

– What are your plans between MSA and Rio?

Right after the World Cup we will continue to Brazil to get used to the climate, environment, living conditions and experience some Olympic vibes. The track will be open for practice only four days before the race, then I will make sure that I get to know every part of it.

You can watch Shlomi at the Mont Sainte Anne World Cup live on Redbull TV at 1920 BST today.

Good luck Shlomi!

UCI MTB World Cup 2016 – Cairns, Australia

It was a long time since the last World Cup (back in August 2015), and it was a long travel to get to this one!

We flew to the other side of the World to make the start line for the opening World Cup of 2016, but it was worth every mile!

33, Haimy, Shlomi, Novus OMX Pro, , ISR

There are a number of things to take into consideration when you are racing in Cairns, Australia. Namely jet lag, the weather, and an unhealthy abundance of deadly animals! Thankfully we were lucky on all three fronts.

After a few days of adjustment, Shlomi and Martin were ready and raring to race. The course in Cairns is a special one – it uses the only cycle tracks allowed in a World Heritage certified rainforest. Where the track finishes, dense rainforest starts, with dangling vines, beautiful bright flowers and an unnerving buzz of life.

Shlomi and Martin both loved the course. It consists of a main climb, a main descent and then a flat open section that brings you back to the finish line. The climb snakes up over rocks and roots, with multiple line-choices and constant natural features to interrupt the rhythm.

The reward for this hard climb was a fast, flowing descent with plenty of jumps, punctuated with technical rock gardens. It suited the boys perfectly!

Come race day, Shlomi and Martin were tested with seven laps of this physical track, in hot and humid conditions.

Sunday afternoon came around quickly. Warm up; start box; grid; 30 second warning; go!

Both Martin and Shlomi missed a start-straight crash by a fraction of a second. Martin had to brake and unclip but he managed to get around and get going. Any hold-ups at the start are costly, but Martin was on a mission.

After completing lap 1 in 50th position, Martin began to climb through the ranks. He was strong and smooth, but also clever – following wheels and tagging onto groups of riders. Experience from the Cape Epic (and from his partner, Sascha Weber) was helping him along. That and some fine form!

Whilst Martin was racing through the field, Shlomi was more settled. He finished lap 1 in 38th place and never strayed too far from that position.

This was a particularly important race for Shlomi as it was one of three races that counts towards his Olympic qualification. Across these three races he must post the highest finishing position of an Israeli rider, so securing a good result in Cairns would stand him in very good stead.

To this end, Shlomi was very happy with his race. He rode strongly, with no mistakes and no misfortune. He finished in 41st position – a strong stand-alone position, and way ahead of his Israeli compatriot.

Martin’s mission was highly successful. Picking his way past riders all race, he finished in 35th position. He high-fived down the finish line to the delight of the crowd, and has been wearing a huge smile ever since!

61, Gluth, Martin, Novus OMX, SV Kirchzarten, GER

We’re really pleased with how the start of the World Cup series went. Now the season is in full swing and we can’t wait for the next races!

CAPE EPIC – OMX to race 2016 edition

With the amazing memories of last year’s race still in our minds, we are very excited to announce that Novus OMX Pro Team will return to the Cape Epic in 2016.

The Cape Epic is a special race – unique in its awesome scale – and it will be a great honour to see our jerseys back on the start line to take on the infamously gruelling eight day mountain bike stage race in South Africa’s Western Cape.

This year Martin Gluth will take on the Cape Epic with fellow German international rider, Sascha Weber, as a full Novus OMX team. Martin and Sascha will both ride last year’s Prologue-winning Silverback Sesta SBC.

For the team, and especially for our South African title sponsor Novus, it was important to have a team at this prestigious race and we are therefore delighted to welcome Sascha Weber – a long time friend of Martin and a very strong athlete – as a guest rider. Sascha is coming off the back of a highly successful cyclocross season where he achieved top 20 World Cup finishes, was a regular visitor to the podium at the EKZ Tour, and got a silver medal at the German National Championships. Sascha is not only fit for one hour of intense racing though, most notably demonstrated by his silver medal at the European Marathon Championships.

Sascha is very happy to be on board with OMX for this unique race and will now focus everything towards it –

“I just finished my world championships in CX so I need now to adapt my training, starting with a camp in Gran Canaria. I am looking forward to the race and I will fight for the best place every day.”

Martin and Sascha are both Cape Epic first-timers, but they will draw upon a lot of racing experience to aim for a top ten overall position.  Martin is excited to get stuck in –

“I know that I will find out my personal limits at longer races, especially stage races. I haven’t done anything comparable in my racing career so I am looking forward to this massive challenge! I can’t wait to ride the Silverback Sesta SBC – a truly world-class bike! I got it already with me in Greece and will adjust it the next few days. I think it’s going to be awesome!”

The 2016 Cape Epic route covers a total of 647km, 14950m of vertical climbing, 110km of singletrack and five venues over eight days of racing.

The 2016 Cape Epic starts in Cape Town on 13th March. We can’t wait for another epic adventure!

Shlomi’s Interview in BikeFreak Mag

Shlomi is featured in the latest edition of the Dutch cycling magazine, ‘BikeFreak’.

Jim van Overbeek, a former Dutch XCO Champion and now editor of BikeFreak, was interested to hear Shlomi’s story, from his home trails in Israel to following the Olympic dream. We are delighted to see Shlomi recognised by international media and we are very proud to support such a hard-working and talented gentleman.

The article is in Dutch, but you can read the original English transcript below from which the article was formed.

Bike freak 1

Q) Shlomi, where do you live right now?

A) I am living in Israel.

Q) On the teamwebsite I read: living in Kibbutz Ein Ha’shofet. Can you tell us a bit how life is there? Can you train OK in the neighbourhood?

 A) Kibbutz is a collective community settlement with socialism lifestyle. My wife was born and raised in the Kibbutz and we have lived here together for four years. The environment is ideal for a cyclist, with endless trails nearby and a peaceful environment. Plus the Kibbutz has a dining room, gym and laundry service – perfect for an athlete like me!

Q) Can you tell me how you started cycling in Israel? Did you do other sports when you were young?

A) From the moment I learned how to ride a bicycle it was a pleasant for me. As a young child I used a bicycle as transportation to school and to visit friends. Naturally I started to challenge myself with basic skills and off road trails. When I was 12 years old I joined a local club and that time I started racing too. Except cycling I used to play inline hockey and play the drums.

Bike freak 2

Q) Do you also race on the road?

A) In my first years of racing I used to compete road bike and downhill. I was good in all of the disciplines, but cross country was – and still is – my favourite.

Q) You are national champ. Congrats! Can you tell us how that race went?

A) Thank you! It was a good battle between me and Rotem Ishay who lives and trains in Colorado and always comes to the race with good form. It was a tactical race – on the last lap I made the gap for the win. It’s the 4th year in a row that I have won the National Champs!

Q) Your dream is the Olympics in Rio. Do you have a chance for selection?

A) Short answer: YES! Long answer: the Olympic qualification divided to 2 parts –

Firstly we need to be sure that Israel is ranked in the top 23 nations who get the chance to go. At the moment Israel is in 18th place..
Secondly there will be an inner qualification for which Israeli rider will go. The test will be 3 World Cup events in the 2016 season.

Bike freak 3

Q) Can you tell us something about the bike scene in Israel? Is MTB getting more popular? Many races? (XCO or Marathon…?) Not too hot to race?

A) The bike scene gets bigger and bigger every year. In the “hobby” level you can see a massive amount of cyclists on the road and off road.
There is a national project for building single trails in many areas in Israel that has been running successfully in the last few years. The possibilities are always extending.
We had 14 UCI races during 2015 as part of our Olympic campaign. Most of the events are XCO. Unfortunately, the professional aspect of the sport is still not in line with the growing popularity of the sport. There is no big sponsor who will raise their hand to develop professional teams and athletes. A young Israeli rider who would like to be professional must find their way in Europe.

Q) I read last year there was even a Epic Israel race! Did you compete there?

A) Yes, there is an Epic Israel. It’s a big event with top class organisation. If you like to explore I can really recommend racing here – there are positive vibes along with amazing trails, and an experience unique to Israel.

Q) Do you follow a special training program? Can you tell something about that?

A) I have a specific training plan for the demands of XCO racing. My coach, Christoph Soukup, is from Austria. During the preparation period I spend a lot of days on the road bike and also in the gym for strength.

Q) How did you get in contact with the OMX Pro Team?

A)  At the end of 2014 my contact with my old team was finished and I needed to find a new team. I knew Paul Beales, Manager at OMX Pro Team, from racing in Europe and fortunately the timing was good for both of us.
Bike freak 4
Q) What are your plans for the future?
A) In the short term the goal is to qualify for the Olympics and then to perform at the crunch time! It would be the first time that an Israeli mountain biker has been to the Olympics. In the future I want to continue doing what I love and being the best that I can be. I will keep pushing hard for better World Cup results and hopefully have another chance to go to the Olympic Games.

Team 2016

There has been just one change to the Novus OMX Pro Team line-up this year, with Annie Last filling the gap left by Martin Gujan. That means that Shlomi, Mariske, Cherie, Martin Gluth and Isla all stay on with the team in 2016, and we are delighted to have them continue the journey with us.

Over the past year this group of riders have made strong bonds and supported each other through the trials and tribulations of elite sport. With this friendship in place, we are really excited to add more adventures and fond memories to those we experienced last year.

Shlomi is a person and athlete that is is hard not to love! His kindness, humour and dedication fitted straight into the team and he has been a superb ambassador for the team and our sponsors over the last year. His win at the HC International in Pietermaritzburg was a highlight of the season, and winning both the XCO and XCM Israeli National Championship titles was also a fantastic achievement. In 2016 the Olympics take centre stage and Shlomi is completely committed to becoming Israel’s first ever Olympic mountain biker. Watch this space!

Novus_OMX_TeamShoot_March2015_GB-866

Also gunning for Olympic qualification is our South African duo of Mariske Strauss and Cherie Vale. Mariske had a frustrating season with injuries that forced her out of competition and training. However, along with Cherie, she managed some great racing at Cape Epic, and showed her steel with a comeback race at the World Championships. Starting off the year in the same positive way at Cape Epic, Cherie then really grew as an elite rider last year. Her desire to learn and improve, alongside some impressive results – namely winning the South African National XCO Championships – showed the World that she is on the ascendency and ready to step it up again in 2016. Both these girls will be on a qualification mission early in 2016. A place at Rio will be hard to attain, but Mariske and Cherie will undoubtedly put their hearts and souls (and really big smiles) into it! We look forward to having these two popular South Africans back in the fold this year.

Isla is another of our riders who suffered from an illness and injury-ridden season. Having been one of the World’s top junior riders, Isla is a promising U23 talent. In her first year she had little chance to prove it, but 2016 looks set to be a chance to shine. If anyone has the fire in her belly to overcome obstacles and achieve great things, it’s Firegirl herself!

Novus_OMX_TeamShoot_March2015_GB-307

Lastly, it’s a great pleasure to have Martin Gluth stay with the team for 2016. Martin is so easy to be around, at leisure and when it comes to race time. He is meticulous and focussed yet relaxed and fun. In 2015 Martin had a really solid season with a consistent World Cup campaign, podiums in South Africa and Germany, and a flair that shows real promise for the coming years.

Novus_OMX_TeamShoot_March2015_GB-312

All in all we are very happy with the composition of Team 2016. We have great riders and great people together in a professional but really fun environment. It looks like a good recipe for success!

ANNIE LAST SIGNS FOR OMX

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that British Champion and Olympian, Annie Last, will join Novus OMX Pro Team in 2016.

To have a truly World-class British Champion on this British team is a dream come true. The team’s growth, especially over the last year, has put us in a position where we can sponsor and support a rider of Annie’s quality and provide an environment in which such a rider can thrive.

Annie 12 1000p

Annie is a four-time British Elite Champion, two-time U23 World Championship Silver Medallist, U23 World Cup Winner, London Olympian (8th place), and Elite World Cup podium finisher. All of this, and still just 25 years old! Annie is, however, much more than just her impressive palmares. She is a friendly face and a wonderful ambassador for the sport as a whole and the many organisations that she works with; she is an excellent role-model with a vast experience who remains passionate and humble; she is a consummate professional both on and off the bike and will no doubt bring both results and lots of laughs to the team.

Annie has had a tough few years with a serious back injury and the subsequent struggle to regain fitness and form. Looking to the future, Annie wanted a stable team environment that she would feel at home in, and the best equipment to race with, to aid her journey back to the top. Here at OMX we know that we can provide both of these key elements for Annie, and it is a great honour that Annie has this confidence in us.

“I am really excited to be part of the Novus OMX Pro Team in 2016. The team is made up of people who are passionate, who will support me to achieve my goals, and who will also have a great time doing it.
I chose OMX Pro Team because I wanted to be part of a good team environment with people who are passionate about bike racing. Having good support from the team allows me to get on with training and racing my bikes as I know I have good people in the background helping me out and looking after me and making sure I have everything I need. Good equipment to race and train on is really important, I want to get back to the front of races and compete with the best in the world, so having bikes and equipment that is some of the best in the world is key.
With OMX I have a great training and race programme which will allow me to perform to the best of my ability and hopefully go fast! It is Olympic year, so it is really important to have everything in place to help me score qualification for Rio.”

Signing Annie Last signifies another big step forward for Novus OMX Pro Team. Not only do we have Britain’s current top cross-country rider, we now have genuine World Cup winning potential. This is the talent that Annie has, and we are very excited that our respective journeys to World Number One will now be together.

You can follow our 2016 journey across social media – we would love to have you on board! To find out a bit more about Annie, check out her OMX Rider Bio here.

MTB Boom!

2015 has been a fantastic year for OMX, and also for mountain biking as a whole.

Take a look at these impressive statistics from the UCI in association with Red Bull Media House:

  •  “In 2015, 19 live programmes were broadcast online (6 Cross-country Men + 6 Cross-country Women + 7 Downhill) on Red Bull TV and on selected partner platforms worldwide
  • In addition, there were thirteen 26-minute highlights programmes reaching 930,000 views
  • In 2015, there was an increase of 45% in viewership compared to 2014: 2.9 million views for live broadcast and replays in 2015 compared to 2 million views in 2014.
  • Big progression for replays in 2015 with over 725,000 viewers for the XCO races.”

The team have had some great ‘airtime’ both in the live coverage and the hightlights programmes and short reels. This offers the OMX team and our sponsors great exposure, with our riders and equipment seen not only by those at the race venue, but by a much bigger and broader audience across the World.

Here are just two of many great examples of our riders in action:

The growth in mountain biking as a whole is reflected in our own increase in fans and followers across social media and around the World. Just by virtue of the fact you are reading this, you are an integral part of this progress for us and our sport. Thank you!
